I guess you all know the Seveso disaster !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seveso is a town, located in the region of Lombardy in Italy. The plant which is build there belong to ICMESA, it produced TCDD (tetrachlorodibenzodioxin). It's the contaminant named "Agent Orange" an herbicide used by the USA military during the vietnam war. Dioxin is also considered genotoxic, it damage DNA on the body.

This accident happened on 10 July 1976 is due to an over heated reactor. This reactor released a cloud containing chlorobenzen and ethylenglycol. Authorities thought that it was the only product that have escaped. But, after some days one case of chloracné appeared. So, laboratories identtified the agent which induced inflamation skin. It's the TCDD.

  Unfortunately; other consequences of this accident were an increase of diabetes, cancers ( gastrointestinal, lymphatic and blood) and cardiovascular problems. The real tragedy was the authority reaction had been too long. They left people exposed to the dioxin because the soil was contaminated, so population did not eat food which came in the area. The animal side was not spared about 3400 animals died.

  This catstrophe had shown that to control a situation is important. It allowed to the authorities to create "seveso directives" for the european union.

         There are some keys points :

    * To establish a list with the plants which can represent a risk and give the name of their dangerous chemical.

    * To predict the possible scenario and consequences.

    * To establish emergency plan.

    * To control urbanization around the plant.

    * To prevent people

     This is an image which reflect the Chloracné effect on the body. chloracne
it's really a pity that authorities didn't react rather.Maybe some people could be spared from this disease.
For people who have been affected,they found 15 children ,but one month later they discover other cases,447 peolple suffered from chloracné.
Concerning our photos. I think that it's related with our text which talk about the famous disasters in the worldwide and their effects.So, the effects of these catastrophes are always
negative,that is why we have published these photos in order to sensitize people and show them the consequences of disasters.

It's a pity the authorities didn't react sooner. Do you know how many people has been affected by this disaster ?
At least it has lead to create the seveso directives.
As regards to your presentation, it is a little bit messy and the pictures like the chloroacne one don't make it attractive. But we like the green background because it fit well with your topic,
indeed it reminds us toxic and lethal chemical products.

Jelena and Nell
